The Midland Area Community Foundation holds the funds for a number of scholarships other than those listed in our other categories. The application and selection process for these scholarships are handled elsewhere, however. These scholarships are noted below along with an indication of whom you would contact for more information. Most of the awards for these scholarships are not presented at the Foundation's Scholarship Awards Night, but instead are handled separately by each institution.

Scholarships Available for 2008

In keeping with the mission of the American Chemical Society, "to encourage in the broadest and most liberal manner the advancement of the chemical enterprise and its practitioners," the Midland Section has endowed The Midland Section American Chemical Society Endowed Scholarship to provide financial support to college students seeking academic degrees in the chemical sciences at colleges and universities in the Section’s area. The Section’s area is Midland, Bay, Saginaw, Gratiot and Isabella Counties as of this writing, but may be expanded. Eligible students will be those majoring in a chemical science who are entering the sophomore, junior or senior level of study. The requirements for receiving a scholarship will be based on academic achievement and potential for contributions to the chemical sciences. Sharon Brady Michigan Technological University Alpha Delta Alpha Sorority Endowed Scholarship Fund provides to provide an annual scholarship award(s) to a female student attending Michigan Technological University and is a member of the Alpha Delta Alpha Sorority with a preference to applicants of Midland and Gladwin Counties. Michigan Technological Univeristy will recommend each year one or more specific students to receive an award.

The mission of The Bremer Family Scholarship Endowment is to provide an annual scholarship award ($750 this year) to a student at Concordia University (Ann Arbor, Michigan) who is pursuing a career in church work. Those interested in this scholarship should contact the Office of Financial Aid at Concordia University: 734-995-7408.

The mission of The Barbara M. Burdon Memorial Scholarship Fund is to provide an annual scholarship award ($1,500 this year) to a Bullock Creek High School graduating senior who will be pursuing a degree in secondary education. Those interested in this scholarship should contact the Bullock Creek High School counseling staff: 989-631-2340.

The mission of the Janet M. Dean Opera Cum Laude Scholarship Endowment Fund is to provide an annual scholarship award ($500 this year) to a deserving graduating senior at Bullock Creek High School in the year of the award. The recipient will display characteristics that Ms. Janet Dean instilled in the school and her students: community service, citizenship, interests in the school. The recipient will be a person who has aided and dedicated his/her time to the community far beyond normal expectations. This is the most important criterion for this scholarship. The mission of The Kenneth J. Dubiel 4-H Endowed Scholarship provides annual scholarship award(s) of $2,000 to Gladwin High School and/or Beaverton High School graduating high school seniors for the purpose of attending an accredited post-secondary educational institution. The successful applicant will be a current and actively enrolled student in the Gladwin County 4-H program and will have been enrolled for at least 5 years. The mission of The Faith Endowment Fund is to assist with the cost of tuition, books and fees ($1,000 this year) for Meridian High School graduates who have financial need and wish to pursue studies at an accredited college or occupational program. Those interested in this scholarship should contact the Meridian High School counseling staff: 989-687-3300.

The mission of the Michael F. Freeland Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund is to provide an annual scholarship award ($500 this year) to a deserving student-athlete who is a graduating senior at Bullock Creek High School in the year of the award. The recipient will have a minimum 3.0 GPA and must be deemed by fellow students, teachers and coaches as a hard worker and unselfish person. The recipient would not necessarily be the most talented athlete or the best student, but someone who can always be counted on for their best effort during every class and every athletic activity. The mission of The Lucas Hammar Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund is to provide an annual scholarship ($800 this year) to a graduating senior from Marion High School, Marion, Michigan. Those interested in this scholarship should contact the Marion High School counseling staff: 231-743-2836.

The mission of The Ray and Flora Hart Scholarship Fund is to provide an annual scholarship to a senior graduating from either Midland High School or H. H. Dow High School in the year of the award (one $1,000 scholarship at each of the two high schools this year). Recipients must plan to attend Delta College, and DO NOT APPLY FOR THIS SCHOLARSHIP. Instead, they are chosen from among their peers by counseling staff members.

The mission of the Hornsby Aviation Education Endowment Fund is to provide an annual scholarship ($1,000 this year) to an individual 15 - 22 years of age who has lived in Midland County for the previous 12 months. The scholarship will be used for Pilot Ground School and/or Flying Lessons within 12 months of the year of the award. Two references are required. Please call Ken Mault at 989-839-9661 to apply.

The mission of The G. Jerome Kesseler Memorial Scholarship Fund is to provide an annual scholarship award ($1,000 this year) to a graduating senior or seniors from Grayling High School, Grayling, Michigan. Those interested in this scholarship should contact the Grayling High School counseling staff: 989-348-7641.

The mission of The Loretta Sorenson Kesseler Memorial Scholarship Fund is to provide an annual scholarship award ($1,000 this year) to a graduating senior or seniors from Grayling High School, Grayling, Michigan. Those interested in this scholarship should contact the Grayling High School counseling staff: 989- 348-7641.

The mission of The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Endowment Fund is to provide annual scholarship awards to a high school senior who is a resident of Midland, Saginaw or Bay County. Applicants must have a minimum 2.0 GPA, be accepted into a 2 or 4-year degree-granting academic or vocational program, and must be able to demonstrate efforts to improve racial harmony/justice. The scholarship award will be announced and presented at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Luncheon Program. Applications will be available annually at tri-county high school guidance offices in December. It has already been awarded for 2008.

The mission of The Laur Family Endowed Scholarship is to provide a $1,500 award to a Meridian High School graduating senior who does not smoke, drink or use illegal drugs, and who plans to attend a Michigan public college which DOES NOT issue charters for charter schools. Students should have a minimum 2.0 GPA and financial need will be a consideration, though not a requirement. The mission of The Michael and Janet Leslie Memorial Youth Fund is: 1) to finance an annual Michael and Janet Leslie Scholarship ($1,500 this year), and 2) to promote youth leadership and citizens hip within the community. Those interested in this scholarship should contact their high school guidance counselor (within Midland County).

The mission of The Meridian Scholarship Fund is to provide annual scholarship(s) for students graduating from Meridian High School. Those interested in these scholarships should contact the Meridian High School counseling staff: 989-687-3300.

The mission of The Jenna Paige Munger Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund is to provide an annual scholarship (at least one $500 scholarship this year) to a Level I or Level II student enrolled in the Davenport University nursing program. For more information about this opportunity, please call the Davenport University Financial Aid Office at 1-800-986-2157.

The mission of The Northwood University Scholarship Endowment Fund is to provide annual scholarships to support students attending Northwood University, Midland, Michigan. Those interested in this scholarship should contact Eric Sturdy at Northwood University: 989-837-4160.

The mission of The Weyant M. Pangborn Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund is to provide an annual scholarship (this year it is two at $500) to persons who are either City of Midland classified employees or dependents thereof. For more information about this scholarship, please contact Sandy Marshall of the City of Midland at 989-837-3319.

The mission of The Pendell Family Scholarship Fund is to provide Midland County residents the opportunity to earn a business degree at Northwood University, Midland, Michigan. Those interested in this scholarship should contact Eric Sturdy at Northwood University: 989-837-4160.

The mission of The Gwendolyn B. Pike Vocal Music Endowed Scholarship Fund is to provide an annual scholarship award to a graduating high school senior who plans to major in voice performance or music education with a voice/choral major. In the event there is no qualified senior applicant, the scholarship could be awarded to an otherwise qualified student who would be already attending college. The successful applicant will be either a student attending or having graduated from a Midland County public or parochial high school, or is a voice student of a Midland County voice teacher. The mission of The Franklin E. Raymond Memorial Scholarship Fund is to provide an annual scholarship for students graduating from Meridian High School. Preference is to be given to individuals planning to enter some aspect of industrial arts education. Those interested in this scholarship should contact the Meridian High School counseling staff: 989-687-3300.

The mission of The Brent L. Romain Endowed Scholarship Fund is to provide an annual college scholarship award of $2,000, to be used for tuition only, to a graduating high school senior who is also a member of the Boys Varsity Soccer Team at Dow High School. If at some point the fund grows large enough to offer additional scholarships, members of other soccer organizations could also be considered. Academics and character will be the deciding criteria for this . Students need not apply; recipients are nominated and selected by a committee.

The mission of the Pamela J. Rowe Endowed Music Scholarship Fund - is to provide an annual scholarship award to a flute student to attend camp, take private lessons, purchase a flute or attend college studying music with an emphasis on flute. Selection of the recipient will be handled by the Midland Concert Band under a process approved by the Midland Area Community Foundation. The mission of The Taylor University Endowed Scholarship Fund will be to provide an annual scholarship to assist a student to attend Taylor University. Those interested in this scholarship should contact Brad Yordy at Taylor University: 1-800-882-3456.

The mission of The John A. Trumbell Memorial Scholarship Fund is to provide an annual scholarship (this year two at $350 each) for students graduating from Bullock Creek High School. Those interested in this scholarship should contact the Bullock Creek High School counseling staff: 989-631-2340.

The mission of The West Midland Family Center / Dow College Opportunity Endowment Fund is to provide scholarships and other educational opportunities for participants in the Dow College Opportunity Program. Students need not apply; recipients are selected by a committee.
