FOR: Graduating High School Seniors

Scholarships Available for 2008

The American Association of University Women--Midland Branch "Graduating Senior Woman" Scholarship is a nonrenewable award of $2,000. The successful applicant must graduate from a high school under the jurisdiction of the MCESA in the year of the award, or be a Midland County resident graduating from high school in the year of the award. The applicant must be a female who ranks in the top third of her class. The essay for this scholarship should describe how this award will help the applicant attain her educational goals. It may include answers to: Why did I select the career I have chosen? What events or situations influenced my career choice most? The essay may also discuss involvement in school and community activities. The award is a combination of merit and need with emphasis on potential contribution to society. Awardee must be pursuing her education full time and be working toward a baccalaureate degree. Two scholarships may be awarded this year.

The Thurman O. Sr. and Mary E. Armstrong Scholarship provides a $2,000 annual award (this year three of these awards may be offered) to a Midland County resident for purposes of attending a college or university. Applicants may be graduating high school seniors, current college students, or adult or nontraditional students. The successful applicant will demonstrate a balance of academic achievement, a history of volunteerism and community service, and the struggle to overcome a significant hardship or barrier (financial, health, family, learning disability, etc.). The essay for this scholarship should describe the applicant's background, achievements, personal and career goals, community service history, obstacles overcome, and why the applicant feels he/she qualifies for this scholarship.

The Jim Ayre Memorial Scholarship provides a $500 award to a Midland County resident. The recipient should demonstrate financial need and be pursuing a degree in business or real estate from one of the following institutions: Delta College, Central Michigan University, Northwood University or Western Michigan University. The recipient need not have been an excellent or even above average student, but should show college potential as determined by school counselors. The scholarship will be available to students pursuing either undergraduate or graduate degrees. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, achievements, personal and career goals, and why the applicant feels he/she qualifies for this scholarship.

The Anna Marie Babcock Memorial Scholarship is two awards of $800 each. Preference will be given to a person who has declared and demonstrated an interest in pursuing a career in teaching. The successful applicant will be a college-bound senior, graduating from a Midland County high school in the year of the award. Applicant must rank in the top 50% of his/her class. The essay for this scholarship should describe personal background and achievements, outline future course of study and explain career goals. Examples of demonstrated interest in teaching may be included.

The Gwendolyn M. Bagley Endowed Scholarship provides $1,000 to a student who is a resident of Midland or Gladwin County and who is either a current college student or graduating senior from a public high school within one of the two counties. Applicants should be planning a career in teaching in the health/physical education area or a career in nursing. The essay for this scholarship should describe achievements, personal and career goals, and involvements which support commitment to career choice.

The Ernest and Martha Britton Memorial Scholarship provides up to two one-time awards of $1,500 for graduating seniors from a Midland County public high school. Financial need may be considered when all other factors are equal. The applicants must demonstrate leadership in service projects through school, scouting, church, etc., and participation in activities such as band, cheerleading, pom pon, Pep Club, etc. The essay for this scholarship should describe personal background and achievements, detail the leadership and participation noted above, outline future course of study and explain career goals.

The James T. Brooks Memorial Fine Arts Endowed Scholarship is an annual award of $750 to a graduating high school senior from Midland Public Schools. The successful recipient will be pursuing a career in fine arts (music, visual arts, theater, dance, etc.) and will have demonstrated outstanding achievement in -- and passion for -- the discipline. Financial need is among the criteria. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, achievements and career goals, and should address why this student feels he/she meets the qualifications for this scholarship.

The Nancy and Parke Brown Scholarship is an award of $1,500 to attend Lawrence Technological University (LTU). Graduating high school seniors, current or transferring students, or previous recipients of this award may apply. The successful applicant must demonstrate financial need (a MAJOR factor) and must be accepted at LTU in the year of the award. The scholarship is contingent upon enrollment of student at LTU. The essay for this scholarship should describe financial need, education and work experience, and career goals.

The Bullock Creek Alumni Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides an annual $500 scholarship award to a Bullock Creek High School graduating senior or Bullock Creek High School graduate. The successful applicant will be planning to attend an accredited community college, college or university, or technical or trade school in the year of the award. Preference will be for applicants who show some work experience, financial need, and a career and community service focus. The purpose of the Fund is to remember alumni and supporters of the Bullock Creek Schools who have passed away. The essay for the scholarship should describe the applicant’s personal background and achievements, financial need, and involvements which support the career and community service focus of this scholarship.

The Pat Bywater Memorial Scholarship provides an annual award of $1,000 for a graduating senior from H. H. Dow or Midland High Schools, or a previous recipient of the award. The applicant must demonstrate financial need. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, achievements and personal goals.

The Michael W. and Mark A. Carey Scholarship provides an annual nonrenewable award of $500 directed to a Midland County resident who is graduating from a Midland County public high school in the year of the award. Preference will be for Meridian High School graduating seniors who will be studying business or environmental science. The applicant must have achieved a high school grade point average of at least 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, achievements and personal and career goals.

The Walter and Therese Cepela Endowed Scholarship provides a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior at Midland High School who is in the top 10% of his/her graduating class, but who has had to work hard for his/her grades and therefore has not been as active in extracurricular or community activities as some other students. The essay should describe personal background, specific interests and/or career goals, and should address why this student feels he/she meets the qualifications for this scholarship.

The Susan Olney Cozat Endowed Scholarship provides an annual scholarship award ($500 this year) to single mothers pursuing a college education. Successful applicants will be Midland or Gladwin County residents, will be single mothers who have underage children living with them, and will demonstrate financial need. Previous recipients may reapply. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, achievements, financial need, and personal and career goals.

The Virginia A. (Nicholson) Dent Endowed Scholarship provides a $2,000 scholarship to an able and deserving violin student for continuing college or university study of the instrument. Students may be either undergraduate or graduate violin students, and may reapply if a B average in their music curriculum is maintained. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, achievements, and career goals, along with the student's thoughts related to study of the violin.

The J. Cecil and Clara DeRemer Memorial Scholarship provides annual awards of $1,000 to Midland County residents who have been accepted as music majors in a degree-granting college or university. Both college students and high school seniors are eligible to apply. A previous recipient may reapply if the student has maintained a B average in the music curriculum. Undergraduates will be given a preference. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, achievements, and reasons for pursuing a music curriculum. At least one of the references should be from a music faculty member.

The Willard H. and Martha P. Dow Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides up to five $5,000 scholarship awards to students graduating from Midland County high schools in the year of the award. Successful applicants will be pursuing higher education in a humanities-related field such as English, foreign language, art, music, journalism, etc. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, financial need and career objectives upon completion of formal education.

The John C. Eckhold III Endowed Scholarship is a $2,000 award to a resident of Midland County who is either a graduating senior or current college student. The successful recipient would demonstrate financial need, and would show how he/she is overcoming or has overcome a personal or family difficulty. The successful recipient woul d also demonstrate a recent commitment to achieving academic success and would be driven to the pursuit of a service-oriented career, such as health/nursing/medicine, education, etc. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, financial need, career objectives, and should address the other specific criteria for this award.

The Kimberly Featherly Memorial Scholarship is a nonrenewable $1,000 award to a Midland County resident pursuing post high school studies in commercial art at an accredited college, junior or community college, university or art school. The term "commercial art" includes standard art major tracks, computer or electronic art, photography and videography. The successful applicant will graduate from a Midland County high school in the year of the award and rank in the top 30% of his/her senior class. The essay for this scholarship should describe plans, career goals, specific interests and qualifications in the commercial art field.

The Christina J. Fisher Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides a $1,000 award to a graduating high school senior who has been involved with the Midland County 4-H Horse Program. A previous recipient of the award may reapply one time only. The successful applicant will have achieved positive youth development in the area of horses, will have significant and active 4-H involvement and will have demonstrated community service and financial need.

The Elloweese Denise Freer Endowed Scholarship provides an annual scholarship award(s) (this year one $500 award) to either a graduating high school senior or current college student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, or a gra duate student pursuing a Master of Nurse Anesthesia, or a graduate student pursuing Veterinary Medicine. The successful applicants will be Midland or Gladwin County residents, and will demonstrate both financial need and strong academics. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, achievements, financial need, and personal and career goals.

The Glenn R. Garrison Endowed Scholarship provides annual scholarship awards (this year one award of $300) to Midland County residents. The successful applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA, have a good work ethic, be involved in Christian church activities, and must demonstrate that they are investing in helping others. Graduating high school seniors, current college students, or adult and non-traditional students may apply. One reference should be from a senior pastor, minister or priest. The essay for the scholarship should describe the applicant’s personal background, goals, church/community involvements, and how he/she has invested into helping others.

The Esther S. Gerstacker Hiram College Scholarship is an award of up to $10,000 for use, by Midland County residents who are also graduates of Midland County high schools, at Hiram College, Hiram, Ohio. Previous recipients may reapply if the students are full-time and maintain at least a B average. Applicants must provide evidence of admission to Hiram College. The essay for this scholarship should describe activities, goals, interests and jobs held. One reference from Hiram College is required for renewal applicants.

The Gerhard and Ruth Gettel Memorial Scholarship is an award of $1,000 (five may be offered this year) and is open to those graduating from a Midland County high school in the year of the award. The applicant must rank in the top 15% of his/her senior class. The degree of difficulty of the courses taken, plus scores on the SAT and ACT tests are factors considered. The essay for this scholarship should follow the theme, "What I Want to Achieve in Life." The essay may include the answers to: Why did I select the career which I have chosen? Or if a career has not yet been chosen, what factors will influence the choice? What events or situations in my life influenced my choice of career most? Also, the essay should include involvement in school and community activities.

The Stephen E. Gorman Memorial Scholarship provides an annual, one-time award of $1,500 to encourage a person less than 25 years of age to attend a public college as a commuting student. Financial need will be considered. The applicant must reside in Midland County, and be a first-time college student commuting to one of the following public colleges: Central Michigan University, Delta College, Mid-Michigan Community College or Saginaw Valley State University. The essay for this scholarship should follow the theme, "My Educational Goals and Interests."

The Crystal Graham Memorial Endowed Scholarship is an annual award of $1,000 to Midland County residents who wish to study in the health professions. Preference will be given to the areas of Therapy (particularly Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy), Physician's Assistant, Nursing and Medicine, in that order of preference. The scholarship may be used at either the undergraduate or graduate level. The essay for this scholarship should describe achievements, personal and career goals, and involvements which support commitment to career choice.

The David N. Grosberg Memorial Scholarship is an annual, nonrenewable award of $500 available to a Midland County resident studying in a health field. Applicants must be accepted into or studying in an accredited college, and must demonstrate academic achievement in sciences as well as financial need. The essay for this scholarship should describe goals, interests and reasons for scholarship need.

The Deborah Lynn Hawkins Special Educator Endowed Scholarship is an annual $2,000 award to Midland or Gladwin County residents who meet one of the following criteria 1. College students or graduating seniors who are pursuing degrees in Special Education 2. College students or graduating seniors who are pursuing degrees in Occupational, Physical or Speech Therapy, but only if their main interest area is working with special education students. Preference will be for the former. A previous recipient may reapply, but may receive the scholarship no more than twice. Grade point average and financial need are NOT major considerations in awarding this scholarship. The most important criterion is a strong desire on the part of the applicant to have a public school career working with severe special needs students. The essay for this scholarship should describe achievements, personal and career goals, and involvements which support commitment to career choice.

The Harold and Francine Heinze Endowed Scholarship is an annual award of $500 available to an individual graduating from a Midland County high school in the year of the award, or a previous recipient of the award. The preference will be given to those pursuing a degree in teaching, and the applicant must show financial need. The essay for this scholarship should describe goals, interests and reasons for scholarship need.

The James F. and Mary R. Hopfensperger Endowed Art Scholarship provides an annual scholarship ($500 this year) to a graduating senior art student(s) in the Midland Public School system who will pursue an education in the visual arts, art education or design (including but not limited to interior, fashion or graphic design) degree at an institution of higher education. The recipient must demonstrate financial need and be active in the community. Grade point average is not a consideration for this scholarship. Selection will be based on the application and a portfolio of art and/or design work.

The Home Builders Association of Midland Endowed Scholarship is offered to encourage higher education in fields supporting the home building industry. There will be two scholarships offered at $750 each. The essay for this scholarship should describe personal background and achievements, financial need, personal goals and career objectives.

The Jeanette R. House Memorial Literature Scholarship is an award of $1,500. The successful applicant will graduate from a Midland County high school in the year of the award, and must be accepted into an accredited college or university with plans to major in English or literature. The essay for this scholarship should describe goals, interests, and reasons for studying English or literature. At least one reference should be from an English teacher.

The Dr. Don D. Irish Memorial Scholarship is an annual, nonrenewable award of $1,500. The successful applicant will graduate from a Midland County high school in the year of the award, and must be accepted into an accredited college to prepare for biochemistry, wildlife management or forestry. Financial need will be a major factor. The essay for this scholarship should describe activities, goals, interests, jobs held, and reasons for electing major field of study. Financial need should also be described. The applicant must be available for an interview with the selection committee if requested.

The Sharon F. Kalina Scholarship Endowment for Special Services Graduates provides a $500 award to a Midland Public School senior who is graduating from one or more of the following programs: Learning Disabled (LD), Emotionally Impaired (EI), Educable Mentally Impaired (EMI), Physically Impaired (PI), Health Impaired (HI), Traumatic Brain Injured (TBI), or Speech. The award will be used mainly for tuition but may also support books, fees and supplies so long as they can be purchased through the educational institution.

The Jan LaCroix Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides an annual scholarship award of $500 to a Bullock Creek High School graduating senior. The successful applicant will be a person of compassion, concern for others, integrity and good citizenship. They will also demonstrate involvement in their school in activities or athletics, and a commitment to volunteerism in the broader community. The essay for the scholarship should describe the applicant’s personal background, goals, school and community involvements, and how he/she has displayed good citizenship in those areas.

The Laurence C. and Janet Glover Lang Endowed Scholarship provides an annual scholarship award (this year one $1,000 award) to a Midland County resident who is either a graduating high school senior or current college student in the year of the award, and whose field of study is pharmacy. Financial need will be a consideration. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, achievements, financial need, and personal and career goals.

The Loretta G. Lee Endowed Scholarship is a $1,200 award to a Midland County resident who has the educational objective of becoming a registered nurse. Successful applicants will demonstrate financial need. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, financial need and career objectives after completion of education.

The Albert T. and Margaret H. Maasberg Scholarship is an award of $2,500 for a student who will be attending a Michigan< /st1:place> four-year college or university. The successful applicant will be graduating from a Midland County high school in the year of the award, or be a previous recipient of the award. Demonstrated academic accomplishment, financial need and community service will be among the factors considered. The essay for this scholarship should describe personal background and achievements, detail community service, outline future course of study and explain career goals.

The Michigan Community Blood Centers - Ernie Wallace Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides an annual scholarship (two awards of $500 this year) to an individual who is continuing their education in a health-related field. The recipient will be a Midland County resident pursuing medical certification at an accredited college, university, or technical medical training facility. An emphasis will be given to a non-traditional student who may be returning to, or entering, an institution of higher learning, or one who is currently studying in a health-related field. Graduating high school seniors will also be given consideration. Additional criteria include a suggested high school GPA of 3.0 or a current college GPA of 2.5. Applicants not meeting suggested GPA requirements are encouraged to have two recognized health care professionals fill out the Scholarship Reference Form. Recipients of the award may again apply for a scholarship in subsequent years. These applications will be processed the same as new applicants. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, achievements, and personal and career goals.

The Midland Area Community Foundation FOUNDERS' Scholarship is an annual award of $1,000 to enable an individual with financial need to pursue o ccupational programs that may be completed in two years or less. One scholarship will be available for a Midland County resident, and one for a Gladwin County resident. Previous recipients may reapply for a second year if the student achieves a B average or better during the first year. The term "occupational education" inclu des, but is not limited to, such programs as welding, automotive mechanics, nursing, office skills, electronic repair and service, and residential construction. These programs normally require 60 credit hours or less. The essay for this scholarship should describe personal background and achievements, financial need, and employment objectives after completion of schooling.

The Midland Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals is offering a scholarship as a memorial to Sharon Tomczak, a former member. This ann ual award of $750 is to encourage pursuit of an office professional program. The term "office professional" includes, but is not limited to, such programs as secretary, medical secretary, legal office professional, administrative assistant, office clerk or stenographer. The successful applicant must have a demonstrated interest in preparing for a career as an office professional and must be enrolled in a related curriculum, and must demonstrate financial need. One of the applicant's references should be a teacher. The essay for this scholarship should describe background, financial need and career objectives after completion of education.

The Midland County Medical Society Alliance Health Careers Scholarship is a financial award to assist Midland County residents who wish to pursue a career in the health care field. The scholarships are based primarily on academic merit, but community service is also viewed favorably. Applicants must be residents of Midland County, must have a GPA of at least 3.0 and must intend to pursue a career in the health care field. They should be applying to, accepted into, or taking prerequisites for a health care program. Recipients may reapply for the award only once after initially receiving the scholarship. Essays for this scholarship should describe strengths, achievements, personal and career goals, and any involvement which demonstrates commitment to a health care field.

The MITECH Plus, Inc. Endowed Scholarship awards up to four $1,000 scholarships to Midland County residents pursuing post high school education in the area of Construction, Bioscience/Health, Manufacturing or Information Technology. In addition, up to four $2,000 scholarships to Midland County residents pursuing post high school education in Chemical Process Technology may be awarded. Educational opportunities can be taken at a community college, university, trade or technical school, or through an industry-recognized certification program. Graduating high school students, current college students, adult and nontraditional students will be eligible. Financial need is not a consideration. The essay for this scholarship should describe personal background, personal achievements, education or work experience and personal and career goals.
