The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Scholarship is awarded each year to high school seniors who strive to actively recognize and promote cultural diversity, respect and the realization of Dr. King’s ‘Dream’. Any high school senior in Midland, Bay or Saginaw County may apply. The most important consideration for selection is how the student has shown their dedication to Dr. Martin Luther King’s vision in their own lives. Activities that promote cultural awareness and encourage multi-cultural equality should be evidenced in applicant’s essay. Examples of behaviors might include church, school, community and leadership activities that strive to promote the vision of an equal society, regardless of heritage.

The scholarship awards are one-time, non-renewable awards of at least $1,000.00. Applications may be picked up at any Tri-City Chamber of Commerce, Community Foundation or downloaded from the Midland Area Community Foundation website (www.midlandfoundation.org).

Applications may be submitted to the Midland Area Community Foundation, Bay Area Community Foundation, or the Saginaw Community Foundation. The scholarship awards will be presented at the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration program to be held on Monday, January 19 , 2009 at the Great Hall at Valley Plaza Resort. Recipients of the awards are required to attend the ceremony.

Sponsors include The Dow Chemical Company, Dow Corning Corporation, Garber Automotive Group, S.C. Johnson, and Chemical Bank. Other partners include Bay City and Saginaw branches of the NAACP.
