The Arc of Midland | Arnold Center Inc. / Access Midland | Big Brothers Big Sisters | Chemical City BandColeman Area Library | Eastlawn Elementary | Humane Society of Midland County | The Little Forks Conservancy | Midland Area Homes, Inc. | Midland Community Center | Midland County Habitat for Humanity Personal Assistance Options | The Salvation Army | Sanford Historical Society | Shelterhouse

The Arc of Midland teaches people with intellectual and developmental disabilities things they need to know to be successful citizens. With $1000 we can split the cost of hiring a teen mentor to help a young person with a developmental disability have a summer job, which will build a foundation for successful employment into the future.

Arnold Center Inc. / Access Midland a service provider to individuals with disabilities/ individuals with differing needs.  Offered our participants an opportunity to give back to their community by filling bags donated by the United Way with a variety of food items.  We strongly believe in the importance of giving back to a community that has given so much to our participants and our organization.   We would like to continue to offer our individuals the opportunity to "give back"!  Thank you....

A Grand will help Big Brothers Big Sisters in our efforts to teach Little Brothers and Little Sisters about healthy eating.   The new Food Pyramid Plate  provides a great way to teach kids about healthy portions of fruits, vegetables, protein, grains and dairy.  Working with Space Studios, our kids will paint their own colorful food plate with the appropriate portion sizes.  Then, we’ll have a cooking party hosted by Menu Manager at the Big Brothers Big Sisters Friendship Center and make a meal together so kids can use their very own food plate!    A pick-up game of kickball in the parking lot will add some exercise, too!

Chemical City Band - If granted an additional $1.000, we intend to commission, and perform, an original work for band in memory of Bob Ralston. Bob was an extraordinary gentleman, a superb teacher, served as a band conductor, orchestra conductor and coordinator of music for the Midland Public Schools, and was associated with the Chemical City Band for 37 years, conducting the band for 22 of those years.

Coleman Area Library - Free Family Movie days! We would like to use the money to purchase a multi-media projector, screen and a public performance license to show family-friendly movies at the library. What a great way to bring the community together and bring some smiles to the faces of Coleman's residents!

Eastlawn Elementary - Eastlawn Elementary would use this grant to provide engaging learning experiences for students in the area of science by connecting classroom studies with experiences outside the classroom. Teachers would use local resources such as the Chippewa Nature Center, Dow Gardens and/or local farms and businesses to create learning opportunities beyond the classroom and Eastlawn's corps of knowledgeable science volunteers would support teachers in extending the learning through hands-on science activities in the classroom; the funds would pay for bussing, entrance fees and materials.

Humane Society of Midland County (HSoMC) - Supporting HSoMC Animal Shelter - surgical and medical supplies - HSoMC would use the Grand Challenge Funds to buy additional medical supplies and equipment to allow us to provide more on-site medical services for sick, injured and wounded animals. This would enable quicker response to many urgent care needs and minimize the need to transport animals for many medical services.

The Little Forks Conservancy - It’s… It’s... A Boardwalk Blitz – Riverview Natural Area’s seasonal pools are great for our amphibian residents, but make it difficult for our visitors to enjoy the property year-round without getting their feet wet or damaging these sensitive habitats. A grant from the Grand Challenge could provide materials for community volunteers to install more than 100 feet of boardwalk which will create new opportunities for interpretive hikes or guests to explore this amazing property on their own.

Midland Area Homes, Inc.- Hoping for funds to purchase a hand operated rolling flat cart with a scissor lift to help low income clients load and take home much needed furniture or appliances. MAH collects donated items to distribute to those in need but it is often difficult particularly for single moms and the elderly to lift up to load to take home.

Midland Community Center - Middle School Athletics - Middle school athletics is more than just playing sports – it provides deep value in being part of a team and engaging in a healthy and safe environment. Our goal is to purchase new equipment in order to continue to provide a quality athletic experience for middle school students.

Midland County Habitat for Humanity - Darren’s Barrier Free Home - Sarah and Darren Smith are Midland County Habitat for Humanity’s 2011 Partner Family, at age four Darren was diagnosed with Ataxia Telangiectasia and lymphoma and he was confined to a wheelchair. Sadly on June 23, 2011, just weeks after MCHFH broke ground on their ADA barrier free home, Darren lost his courageous battle, MCHFH would use the $1,000 toward the completion of this barrier free home in Darren's memory.

Personal Assistance Options - Mentoring and more - Personal Assistance Options provides Mentoring services to youth with disabilities in our community. We would like to start a “Mentoring Library” where the youth and their Mentor can check out art supplies, books, crafts, board games, etc. to work on building their life skills of communication, socialization, health and safety in a fun way.

The Salvation Army - We would like to purchase back-to-school supplies for children in need in our community.

Sanford Historical Society - Toys for the Santa Express - The Society wants to purchase small toys for children for the Sanford Museum Santa Express event held on December 13, 14 & 15.

Shelterhouse - Rub a Dub Dub! Rub a dub dub, Shelterhouse needs a tub (actually washers and dryers). Three washers, three dryers and soap to boot, Grant us this money, for a hoot (actually for clean clothes).
