Safe Haven Outreach Center Grant

Submitted by;  Safe Haven Outreach Center

The Safe Haven Outreach Center received a grant from the Midland Area Community Foundation to paint the building which houses the center.  Safe Haven is a non-profit organization that is operated for and by individuals with mental illness.  Safe Haven provides a safe and welcoming place for people who experience mental illness.  There are organized activities as well as space to just visit, use a computer or get a hot lunch.  In addition, Safe Haven operates a “warm line” so that people have an opportunity to seek assistance before mental health symptoms become a crisis.  The center serves over 100 individuals in the community either through the warm line, planned activities and groups or the drop in space.

Safe Haven is an important resource for people who experience mental illness.  Support from the community to maintain the building is critical.  It was exciting for the participants in the program to hear that our community foundation sees the value of the center and provided the grant to improve and maintain the building.  Participants took a vote on the colors, so everyone feels that they are participating in the project.

This project fits the Midland Community Foundatio'ns mission to strengthen our community by providing leadership, fostering collaboration on local needs and issues, and encouraging a legacy of giving through grants, scholarships and event
