Welcome to the 2024 Art Seen Festival Archive

The 2024 festival included two beautiful large-scale commissioned murals and one incredible community mural.

The community mural, titled Bloom, was designed by local artist, Allise Noble, facilitated by Parker Lane Art & Design Studios and painted with the community! This mural was painted on wood panels down by the courthouse on Main Street, then was installed at Pizza Sam’s, 102 W Main St, on the Ashman St side of the building.

Of the Bloom design, Noble says, “This design was created in bright, cheerful colors with dark outlines so that it can be easily viewed from far away. The faces were done in a line contour style, with different blended colors to represent racial diversity. I wanted my design to celebrate inclusion, and emphasize that we need everyone’s presence and ideas to have the best community possible. I hear so many people feeling defeated, isolated, and like they have no place. This mural can serve as a powerful reminder to people who may be struggling that ‘you are valuable!’ no matter your background, age, or ability. The people are visually diverse, but I also wanted to include the idea of neurodiversity, which is often invisible. This is why I included the symbol inside the butterflies in the foreground. The overall message is that we all grow better individually when we have a village to support us, and that our community grows and thrives when everyone is included.”

We were thrilled to meet and work with the team of artists known as Often Seen Rarely Spoken. OSRS is a commercial art team based in Louisville, Kentucky who have been creating murals throughout the region since forming in 2016. “Our mission is simple: to interact with our environments. We want to create public art
that speaks to the community and tells local history. Our goal is for our work to wow youngsters, inspire individuals, and encourage pride from residents of all ages. Our processes involve techniques from a variety of avenues: photography, graphic design, screen printing, virtual reality etc. Much of our work involves typography and dimensional lettering, which we lay bold solid shapes and patterns against to juxtapose an aesthetic that feels rich and stimulating while not overly complex. Imagery in our work often relates to relics of the past– a telephone booth, an analog clock or a postal box – gesturing an opportunity to produce dialogue and storylines.”

The mural they designed is located at Located at LaLonde’s Market, 4007 North Jefferson Avenue, on the Jefferson Ave side of the building. It’s a beautiful representation of Midland, utilizing Mid-Century Modern colors, fonts, and shapes it adds a welcoming burst of personality to The Neighborhood.

Our largest mural to date is located in Lee Township and was created by Colorado native, David Swartz. This big and bold, weird and wonderful design can be enjoyed at 430 W Isabella Rd, on the East side of the building.

Of the design David says it is, “A chimp experiencing that first moment of higher consciousness! Brain synapses firing, continuous epiphanies, each breath is a whole new world! My design is pretty straight forward. It’s energetic, fun, and dynamic. I incorporated some American Robins which are the Michigan state bird. Because Michigan is awesome and American Robins are (beautiful). The whales are just for fun.”

We also had two nights of amazing live music presented by The Blue Light. Meet the musicians here.

Art Seen Festival seeks to strengthen our Midland County, Michigan, community through vibrant mural making and live performances. Accessible public art is a meaningful way to connect people to feel seen, heard, and included. Art inspires us and propels us forward while bringing voice to diverse experiences, and people. Art is a catalyst for belonging, and supports a community where all people have the opportunity to thrive.

2024 Meet the Artists

Meet Allise Noble

Allise Noble’s concept been selected for the community mural to be created for Pizza Sam’s for the 2024 Art Seen Festival! She will work with the team from Parker Lane Art & Design Studios to bring this concept to life.

Allise is an award winning Michigan artist with a background in fine art and interior design. She teaches art to creators of all ages and abilities throughout the Great Lakes Bay region, and is especially passionate about working with artists with disabilities and mental health struggles. Her art celebrates the natural world around us and all those who inhabit it. Living things truly are works of art in and of themselves, but often our interior landscapes are even more interesting. Allise believes art should show us something we cannot see in real life, and enjoys visually exposing the unique mental environment of the subjects in my work. In each piece, she aims to begin a story that the viewer gets to finish. Allise believes everyone is an artist in some way, and it is never too late to begin. She loves empowering others to share their creativity with the world.

Meet the Often Seen Rarely Spoken Team

Often Seen Rarely Spoken has been selected as our LaLonde’s Market muralist team for the 2024 Art Seen Festival!

OSRS is a commercial art team out of Louisville, Kentucky who have been creating murals in communities across the Eastern United States since 2016. Our mission is simple: to interact with our visual environment. We want to create public art that speaks to the community and tells local history. Our goal is for our work to wow youngsters, inspire individuals, and encourage pride from residents of all ages.

Our processes involve a variety of techniques from photography, to graphic design, to screen printing, to virtual reality set-ups. Much of our work involves typography and dimensional lettering, which we lay bold solid shapes and patterns against to juxtapose an aesthetic that feels rich and stimulating while not overly complex. Imagery in our work often relates to relics of the past – a telephone booth, an analog clock or a post box – gesturing an opportunity to produce dialogue from onlookers.

We consistently work in our two Kentucky studios to produce paintings and online merchandise that further explore our practices of self-expression. It is our goal to communicate with the public through as many mediums as possible, be that concrete, clothing, stickers, social media, or an art gallery.

Meet The Parker Lane Team

Parker Lane Art & Design Studios has facilitated our community murals since year one! Dacia and Jazz designed our first community murals, collaborated with Selena Ashley Designs in 2023, and are now looking forward to collaborating with Allise to bring another incredible community mural to Midland!

Meet Dacia Parker

Midland, MI based artpreneur, Dacia Livingston Parker received her first oil paint set at age seven which sparked a myriad of artistic ventures. After graduating from The University of Michigan School of Art and Design with a BFA, Dacia and her husband settled in the Seattle area for 13 years. Deeply inspired by the ocean, mountains, and natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, those elements became foundational to her work. It was there that Dacia launched her own portrait photography studio, exploring the possibilities offered by digital media.

Returning home to Michigan in 2006, Dacia has been involved in the local arts community ever since; initially practicing photography and developing educational programming as a founding member of Captured Studios in the Ashman Plaza. She rebranded as Parker Lane Art & Design Studios in 2018 to offer a space for creative instruction and professional development for emerging artists, one of her passions. In her role as co-chair of Public Arts Midland, Dacia helps coordinate artistic projects in partnership with local community groups including management of numerous juried exhibitions and events. Within Ashman Plaza, Dacia curates and exhibits local up and coming artist shows regularly. Parker Lane Design and Art studio is a co-sponsor for the annual Emerging Artist show at Creative 360 in Midland, MI.

Dacia strongly believes that “ART is for Everyone” and that Public Art allows opportunity and access to the larger community to enjoy and engage with fine art installations throughout their city. Indeed, in recent years, Dacia has ventured back into painting and working with cyanotypes where her love of the elements – water, mountains and nature continue to inform her work exploring depth, movement, flow, and rhythm. Through her work with PAM, she has become a well-known muralist, collaborating with local artists and community partners.

A native of Michigan, Dacia is deeply dedicated to cultivating the arts in the Great Lakes Bay Region. She has a passion for mentoring emerging artists and building support for local artists and public arts projects in the area. As a practicing artist, Dacia is keenly aware of the issues facing artists today and as an arts administrator, provides a supportive climate while engaging in education and public outreach.

Meet Jazz

Jazz has always been aware of the Spiritual world around them. Knowing that we are all called to a higher purpose, she has described their journey as “humbly complex & spiritually raw.” “Trust the journey” & “Enjoy the process”, these two phrases have become their mantras for getting through tough times in life and have also helped in the pursuit of purpose. Jazz says that their impatience as an artist can be somewhat of a conundrum, but their has been on an ongoing journey to learn “perspective of the present.” Like most people, Jazz finds the “chase” of the next idea or step in life to be exciting and somewhat frustrating. Jazz has come to understand that the here and now is more important to help define what comes next. Jazz hopes to inspire people to sit in their present moments and take the steps to Enjoy Life through art & existence.

Robin Abbott

With a collection of traditional and modern folk songs, Robin Abbott comes with a guitar, ukulele and banjo strapped on her back while carrying a voice that can silence a crowded room and break a loving heart. Raised in Belle, Missouri, a small town nestled in the foothills of the Ozark mountains, Robin also spent time in Kentucky and Virginia. She now makes her home in Saginaw, MI. Trained on the trumpet in the school band, her voice went unnoticed most of her formative years until she received a banjo as a gift in 2018. Since discovering her own voice and her overwhelming desire to sing she has been simultaneously learning banjo, ukulele, guitar and upright bass to support her sometimes delicate, sometimes shockingly powerful voice. Robin is also a textile artist under the moniker Woven Robin and is known for her nature inspired tapestries and wall art. In addition, Robin also has served as a volunteer board member for the Folk Society of Midland since 2021. facebook.com/robinabbottmusic

Merissa Faye

Merissa Faye has been playing and writing music for over half her life. She started performing in the mid-Michigan area in coffee shops and has since been able to play her music on new stages, including the World Friendship Shell stage. Merissa enjoys playing her original songs and various pop covers that you can sing along to. When she’s not singing and playing guitar, she can be found writing her novel or reading with a vanilla oat latte in hand.

Mintlights

MintLights is a music project created by Lux Izquierdo that started in 2015. Lux was born and raised in Queretaro, Mexico, but moved to Michigan in 2014, where MintLights was created. The name MintLights comes from Lux’s synesthesia when listening to music, which usually comes as lights in minty colors (cool greens, blues, and purples). MintLight’s repertoire includes a little something for everyone: from songs by the Beatles, Queen, and Journey, to Paramore, Ed Sheeran, and original songs written by Lux.

Aiden Murray

For as long as I can remember, music has been a constant in my life. Whether I’m listening, writing, or just covering a song, there is always something new within it. Creating my own songs is something I love to do and I love sharing them with people. It inspires me to think that music is free- you can do whatever you want with it, make it your own.

Parker Zimmerman

I love performing and making people happy. I love having something for the crowd to enjoy and I will always do my best 🙂

@parker.zimmerman

Smoky the Cat

Smoky the Cat was born and raised in Midland, MI. Growing up, she was surrounded by sounds of The Beatles, Bob Seger, Hall and Oates, Motown, and many more. Later she also became drawn to Regina Spektor, Amy Winehouse, Lorde, and Fiona Apple. All of these influences have guided her musical journey and contributed to her sound as an artist.

Becka Stewart

Becka Stewart moved from Idaho with her husband and 3 children in 2016 to be close to family. She has been a nurse for 12 years and currently works as a Labor and Delivery RN at MyMichigan Regional Medical Center. Prior to nursing school and building a family, Becka was a lead vocalist in a corporate band out west where she traveled the surrounding states providing entertainment for weddings and events. After a long break from music, Becka decided to learn how to play guitar so she could perform on a smaller scale at local shops and venues. Just recently she has started writing her own music and really enjoys the creative process. When Becka isn’t helping bring babies into the world, playing live music, or watching her kids play sports, she is spending time at Every-BODY Fitness. She is very excited to tap into her passion for health as she supports members at the studio as a Flexibility and Wellness Coach.

Erik Ryden

Midland native Erik Ryden has spent most of the last two decades performing around Michigan. You may have seen him with Life Size Ghost, Brett Mitchell & the Mitchfits, AKFM Trio, and Erik Ryden & the Unk of Funk. Influenced by the great blues players, flatpickers and, “Many fine folks rebellious in nature,” Ryden’s performances always deliver an authentic and honest impression of what it means to be a working musician. Find his original song “Guitar Pickin'” (feat. Mark Lavengood) on all digital music platforms.

Special thanks to our sound technician: Dave Mead

My journey in music started as a child, traveling with my parents who were also singer/songwriters. Music has been a way for me to connect with things that tend to lie deep within the soul of humanity. Music inspires, motivates, and brings an indescribable clarity to me. It taps into emotions like love, joy, peace, sorrow, loss, and pain. It gives hope to the hopeless, healing to the hurting, peace for the anxious, and love for the lost and lonely. Because of this, writing music has become a way for me to remind myself of what is most important and motivate me to do whatever it takes to keep fighting for it.

You can hear Dave perform earlier in the day Sunday at the Summer Art Fair!
