Arthur and Martha McComb Endowed Scholarship Fund #497
To provide annual scholarship awards to a graduating senior, returning student or a non-traditional student who demonstrates financial need. This scholarship is open to any course of study, but preference will be given to students who are pursuing a course of study in the chemical process technology/chemical process operator or Child Development. The recipient must be a graduate of a Midland or Gladwin County high school or reside in these counties.
From the fundholder:
This scholarship was established by Michael and Linda (Ilsley) McComb to memorialize Mike’s parents. Arthur McComb and Martha Rabe were born in northern Midland and southern Gladwin County respectively. Art could have been a fine mechanical engineer and Martha a great teacher, but neither had the opportunity to attend college or a trade school because their farm family income was very limited. While they were of different faiths (which was a real challenge for marriages at that time), they were married in 1937. Though neither were able to obtain a formal education, they worked hard and provided excellent care in a home filled with undying love. This allowed their three children to all graduate from college as a teacher, a nurse, and an engineer. Art worked as an operator/janitor at Dow, and Martha provided childcare to many. They were always willing to give whatever they could to worthy causes. Both were charter members of two long-time Midland churches (Blessed Sacrament Catholic started in 1951 and Trinity Lutheran started in 1941).
We sincerely hope this scholarship fund can allow deserving Midland area students the opportunity to get an education in the fields in which Art and Martha worked, with the hope that they can in the future provide a loving family relationship that will allow their offspring to achieve what we have been able to achieve in our lives. We wish you the best of luck in achieving your dreams, much as our parents achieved theirs.
