From the fundholder:

Bob G. Caldwell, known as “BG”, was a beloved man and respected leader of Dow Chemical for years.

BG was a farm boy who had visions of becoming a chemical engineer. Not coming from a lot of money, he worked his way through college at the University of Missouri where he met his wife Helen, who later became a teacher in a one-room school house. Their love was almost instant, and soon BG was writing a letter to Helen’s parents, asking for her hand in marriage.

BG was a bright young man, and was hired by Dow Chemical in the 1940’s to help build and operate a large Dow facility in Freeport, Texas. Over the years, after many other assignments and promotions, he became the director of operations for Dow’s Latin American area. He was a part of a hard-working generation that helped make America the great country it is today. BG was an excellent engineer, and an effortless leader at Dow. He spent countless hours with his co-workers, dedicated to their success and wanted nothing more than for people to pursue their dreams.

In 1977, BG became the general manager of the Michigan division of Dow Chemical and lived in Michigan with his wife and family. Tragically, BG passed away in a fishing accident in 1984. His wife Helen lived to be 94 years old until her passing in 2014. They are survived by many loving family members and friends.

This scholarship was set up to honor BG, and to continue his long time service of helping others achieve their dreams and goals. BG was a farm boy who worked hard to get himself through college and would have been happy to know that bright young students would be studying engineering, chemistry, or business/industrial management in his name.
