Deputy Sheriff Earl C. Martindale Scholarship Fund #0118

This fund provides an annual scholarship award to a first-year student at Delta College police academy who is a Midland County High School graduate and has financial need. Applicants should include in their essay why they want to become a law enforcement officer and how they hope to impact the lives of the citizens they serve.

From the fundholder:

The Deputy Sheriff Earl C. Martindale Scholarship was established by former Midland County residents, Michael and Theresa Bradley. Deputy Martindale was killed in the line of duty on January 18th, 1935 while apprehending a burglary suspect in Coleman, Michigan.

Through the passage of time, Deputy Martindale’s sacrifice was forgotten. Thanks to research conducted by formed Midland County Sheriff Jerry Nielson and his brother, former Coleman Police Chief Larry Nielson, the loss of Deputy Martindale was uncovered, and his name was added to the wall of The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in 2015. Theresa Bradley commented “Our hope is that through this scholarship, Deputy Martindale’s service and sacrifice for the citizens of Midland County will never be forgotten again.” This Scholarship will pay the tuition for a first year student at the Delta College police academy. Eligible students can apply for the scholarship by writing an essay on why they want to become a law enforcement officer and how they hope to impact the lives of the citizens they serve.
