From the fundholder:

The JOHN W. RYAN SCHOLARSHIP provides an annual $1,000 scholarship award to a graduating senior of a Midland County High School or current college student who will be completing a chemistry class at Delta College and is planning to pursue a chemistry related field of study.

John Ryan was one of the first night professors in the early 1960’s at Delta College and taught organic chemistry. After a full day’s work at Dow Corning he would thoroughly enjoy heading to Delta College to teach.

John was the first one to go to college in his immediate family. He lost his dad when he was 7, and came from a family that worked hard to keep food on the table. His mother, aunt and uncle all encouraged him to do something to make a good living. He worked during his college years and paid his way through school, including washing dishes in the dormitory.

Pursuing organic chemistry, John completed his undergrad at Loras College and Masters at University of Iowa. Then following his favorite professor to the University of Kentucky, he completed his PH.D. John’s wife, Joan started this scholarship in memory of him.
