Gladwin Youth Recognized for their Commitment and Work in Gladwin County

The Gladwin Youth Action Council (GladYAC), a group of youth organized by the Midland Area Community Foundation, celebrated their successes at the yearly banquet on May 12.  The group is dedicated to enhancing their community through grantmaking, volunteering, and leadership. GladYAC is comprised of 6 - 12 graders in Gladwin County.

In 2008-2009, the group gained 15 new members, although they are still seeking members from Gladwin schools.  At the yearly banquet, they celebrated a long list of their community involvement including raising $750 in pledges for the "Walk for Warmth" in Gladwin County, judging Beaverton's fall downtown decorations, participating in the community Easter Egg Hunt, raising money to adopt a family for Christmas through a bake sale and pop can drive, and collecting coats and other winter wear for families.

In addition to their volunteer activites, GladYAC members also represented their group in professional capacities.  Highlights include that four students will attend the YAC Summer Regional conference at MSU in June.  Harley Sasse, GladYAC President was recognized as the State YACer of the Month.  The group participated in the YAC Regional conference in the fall, and YAC members presented at meetings of the Beaverton Area Business Association and the Gladwin Rotary Club.

The yearly banquet was a positive event to honor and highlight these youth and they dedication to giving back to their community.  Speakers included Joan Cashin, Superintendent of Beaverton Rural Schools, who spoke about the added benefit these youth bring to the community, and Scott Govitz, a member of the Midland Area Community Foundation's Board of Trustees, who reminded the youth that they are the future philanthropists and leaders.  Also honored was Joyce Swartzmiller, a longtime volunteer advisor for the program who is well known for her work in the community.  GladYAC is a volunteer group and open to any resident of Gladwin County who is age 12-21.  For more information or to get involved, please contact Lynn Heil, GladYAC Coordinator at 989-839-9661.
