Congratulations to Midland High School Hockey Coach Jeff Brown!
The Stoppert Selection Committee has named Midland High School Varsity Hockey Coach Jeff Brown as this year’s Bob Stoppert Coach of the Year. The award was established to recognize a coach who has done an outstanding job of coaching the previous fall, winter or spring sports season.
As a father, coach and role model, Bob Stoppert devoted a majority of his life investing in young people. In addition to his coaching experience, Stoppert was also a teacher at Midland High School, a member of the Lions Club for 56 years, an active member of the Methodist Church, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Eight years ago, family and friends of Bob Stoppert created two funds with the Midland Area Community Foundation: one to support scholarships for aspiring teachers and one to honor Stoppert’s dedication to Chestnut Hill Elementary School. At that time the Bob Stoppert Coach of the Year Award was also developed.
This year’s recipient, Jeff Brown, has been Midland High School’s Varsity Hockey Coach since 1997, leading the team to a record of 245-99-6. He also served as Bullock Creek High School’s Varsity Assistant Football Coach and currently coaches a Midland Soccer Club youth team. Last season the Chemic Hockey team finished with a record of 19-6, good for first place in the Saginaw Valley League.
Jeff has been named Saginaw Valley League Coach of the Year 7 times, and received the honor of Midland High School Coach of the Year in 2011.
Jeff Brown exemplifies the community spirit and love of sports displayed by Bob Stoppert. Jeff actively encourages hard work, sportsmanship and teamwork, leading to much of the success his team has shown. The award was given on Tuesday, September 18th at a banquet hosted at the Midland County Club. A permanent plaque is on display at the Midland Civic Arena with current and past winners of the Bob Stoppert Award.
