News Release: MACF, City to hold Fun Zone ribbon cutting ceremony

The Midland Area Community Foundation (MACF) and the City of Midland would like to invite members of the community to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday, June 8th at 5:30 PM to celebrate the renovations of the Fun Zone.

The Fun Zone is located in Plymouth Park and was initially built in 1994. Although it has had regular maintenance over the past 20 years, the Fun Zone will be more accessible, colorful, and up-to-date with the renovations.

Several concepts of the renovation were proposed by community members through two public meetings and an online survey. The Fun Zone will remain mostly wooden, but the update will add over two dozen new climbing, swinging, and interactive playground components, with a number of them being handicapped accessible. There will also be a large shade sail to provide protection from the sun, as well as fencing around the entire complex for safety.

The volunteer-based project will begin Wednesday, June 4th and end Sunday, June 8th. MACF is selling engraved pickets for the fence surrounding the Fun Zone. Each picket costs $50, which will help offset the costs of the renovation. Each picket can be engraved with a name or short message.

“We are very excited and ready to start the renovation on Wednesday,” said Karen Murphy, Public Services Director for the City of Midland. “We are so thankful for the outpouring of donations and assistance for the project.”

Free pizza and cupcakes will be served to anyone attending the ribbon cutting ceremony on June 8th. According to MACF President and CEO Sharon Mortensen, the ceremony will also serve as a time to thank the over 300 volunteers involved with the project.

“It is important to host this ribbon cutting not only as a celebration of the renovation, but as an opportunity to recognize the many people who had a hand in realizing it,” said Mortensen. “From school penny drives to volunteers who will be here the entire build week, this truly is a community effort. We see this as another way to enrich and improve the quality of life in our community.”

The Fun Zone will be open for a brief time after the ribbon cutting ceremony, and is expected to reopen to the public on Saturday, June 14th after the finishing touches of the renovation are complete.
