News Release: New Scholarship Funds Opened at MACF
Three new scholarship funds were recently opened at the Midland Area Community Foundation (MACF). A total of 172 scholarship funds are now available to Midland County students through MACF.
Louis “Bud” C. Rubens Scholarship
The Louis “Bud” C. Rubens Scholarship was opened in December 2014 with the purpose of providing an annual award to a student studying chemistry, physics or biology. Preference for this award is given to applicants in financial need and a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
According to Ruben’s son Dave Heminger, he was a proud advocate of science and passionate about youth in his community.
“Bud was a Midland resident for 74 years,” said Heminger. “He was a renowned Dow Chemical Polymer Scientist with 58 patents to his credit. Bud was passionate about chemistry, innovation and mentoring other young scientists.”
The scholarship fund was established to memorialize Rubens and provide financial assistance for local students in need.
Reed Phillips Memorial Scholarship
The Reed Phillips Memorial Scholarship will offer an award to a Bullock Creek High School senior or recent graduate. Students applying for this scholarship should be active in sports, leadership activities and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Reed Robert Phillips was a 2007 Bullock Creek High and Central Michigan University graduate. In July of 2014, he tragically passed away as a result of a single engine airplane accident. Reed was a natural leader and gifted athlete who enjoyed climbing, hiking and spending time with friends and family.
John W. Ryan Scholarship
The John W. Ryan Scholarship provides an award to any Midland County high school senior or graduate who will be attending Delta College in a field related to chemistry. Preference is given to those with financial need.
John William Ryan, who passed away in late 2014, had a 35-year career at the Dow Corning Corporation. During his time at Dow Corning, Ryan was awarded several patents and eventually directed all of their research efforts.
Each year, scholarships funds held at the community foundation are made available to Midland County students. The MACF scholarship application period ends on March 2nd, 2015. More information on how to apply can be found at www.midlandfoundation.org or by calling MACF at 989.839.9661.
