Stories from the Midland Area Community Foundation

Midland’s 24-hour giving day, Give Local Midland, takes place on May 7th

April 29th, 2024

Give Local Midland, the annual 24-hour giving event for nonprofit organizations with endowed funds at the Midland Area Community Foundation, returns on May 7. The impact of Give Local Midland in 2023 exceeded $450,000.

Since 2014, Give Local Midland has focused on building long-term sustainability through growing nonprofit endowment funds. Donations made on May 7th will be deposited into the spendable portion of endowment funds, and the $70,000+ match pool will be deposited into the permanent portion of the funds.

“Give Local Midland is an incredible way to build long-term community capital while assisting community organizations with current needs,” said Sharon Mortensen, President & CEO of the Midland Area Community Foundation. “As we focus on transformation in our community, Give Local Midland is an impactful event to assist nonprofits that help our community thrive.”

On May 7, over 65 area nonprofits will participate in the 24-hour giving day, raising money, promoting engagement, and elevating awareness of the inspiring work of Midland area nonprofits. Nonprofits will encourage the support of their organizations while competing for $3,000 in additional prizes. Prize competitions vary in criteria and evaluation. Some bonuses are awarded based on time, creativity, and the number of donors.

“Give Local Midland is an engaging event where nonprofits can put their organization on display and engage in some fun, friendly competition as they compete for prizes,” said Mortensen. “Give Local Midland is a unique way for organizations to engage a new audience.”

In addition to contributions and prize winnings, nonprofits will split a percentage-based match pool. $70,000+ in matching dollars have been committed by the Community Foundation and its Donor Advised Fundholders. The match pool makes Give Local Midland the perfect time to give to area nonprofits by maximizing community contributions. All match pool dollars will support long-term sustainability.

For community members interested in giving, it’s as simple as visiting GiveLocalMidland.org on May 7 and donating via credit card. All participating organizations are listed on the site, and the minimum contribution amount is $5, reaffirming the idea that anyone can be a philanthropist. If you’d like to give via cash or check, please drop your gift off at the Community Foundation at 76 Ashman Circle by 3 PM on May 7.
