Jim Malek: Wave Maker

Jim Malek: A Wave Maker’s Society Story

Jim Malek’s story begins quietly, the way many acts of generosity do, with a decision to turn a life change into lasting purpose. Searching for a way to show his daughters how to give back to the community led him to the Midland Area Community Foundation, where service, philanthropy, and community would become deeply intertwined with his own journey.

Over time, Jim became far more than a donor. He became a volunteer, a fundholder, and a steady believer in the idea that ordinary people can create extraordinary impact. Named Philanthropist of the Year in 2015, he accepted the recognition with characteristic humility, saying the honor simply made him “want to continue doing things” for the Foundation and the community he had grown to love.

That love for community shows up in both visible and quiet ways. For more than two decades, Jim has helped bring fireworks to the Midland Area River Days Festival, transforming a personal fascination with chemistry and pyrotechnics into a shared celebration for thousands of residents. What once felt like the private success of synthesizing a new molecule became something broader. “Fireworks are community-wide,” he reflected, describing the joy of creating experiences everyone can share.

His generosity also extends to education. A scientist by training, Jim believes deeply in the power of knowledge and opportunity. He has established multiple scholarships, many focused on science and chemistry, to help students pursue the same kind of future that shaped his own life. “You can’t deny science,” he said plainly. “Science is the fact.” Through these scholarships, he hopes to inspire more students to follow paths grounded in discovery, curiosity, and lifelong learning.

Yet Jim’s relationship with the Community Foundation is not only about specific projects or named funds. It is also about trust in something larger. Reflecting on his giving, he explained simply, “Obviously, I trust the Foundation and investing generally in the community is a good idea.” That belief captures the spirit of the Wave Maker’s Society, where donors choose to support flexible, community-wide impact through the Community Investment Fund, allowing the Foundation to respond to emerging needs and opportunities across Midland County.

For Jim, that broad investment matters because community change often begins with place. He has supported transformational efforts like Founders Crossing and continues to focus on the future of Downtown Midland. Walkability, connection to the Pere Marquette Rail Trail, and the simple closeness of daily life shaped his own decision to live Downtown, and they now shape his hopes for what Midland can become. Looking ahead, he shared a quiet vision: if future needs are not clearly defined, his own fund will ultimately focus on supporting the Downtown area, including places like the Midland Area Farmers Market that bring people together.

This blend of personal passion and community trust is exactly what the Wave Maker’s Society makes possible. Through the Midland Area Community Foundation, donors like Jim can translate memory into meaning, expertise into opportunity, and generosity into long-term transformation. The Foundation becomes both steward and partner, ensuring that each act of giving, whether a scholarship, a celebration in the night sky, or an investment in shared space, continues working for the community far into the future.

Jim once said he prefers to make a difference “behind the scenes,” engaging in ways that feel natural and authentic to him. But the truth is visible everywhere: in students pursuing education, in families watching fireworks over the river, in neighbors gathering Downtown, and in the quiet confidence that Midland’s future is being shaped by people who care enough to give.

That is the power of a Wave Maker. And through the Community Foundation, it is a legacy that keeps moving forward, together, bold in purpose, and rooted in love for community.
