Public Arts Midland

M20 Bridge Mural Project

The Public Arts Midland Committee, an initiative of the Midland Area Community Foundation, seeks artist responses via this Request for Proposals (RFP) to commission an original, site‐specific work of art by a professional artist(s) to take place in Midland, Michigan. Two distinct or two cohesive art installations will be located on each side of Midland’s Pere Marquette Rail Trail, on beams and columns of the underside of the M20 bridge (photos below). The surface space for the artwork consists of the faces of two concrete beams supporting a traffic bridge over this pedestrian trail. The artwork may take the form of mural, low‐relief sculpture or other appropriate forms of art (or a combination of these), and is open to artists with the demonstrated capacity to create a fully‐realized work of art in any of those forms. The development of the work of art should include significant and meaningful representation of the Midland, MI community.

Design proposals are due February 1, 2021. Announcement of winner will be no later than April 1, 2021. Finalists may be contacted by March 15 for additional details. Schedule for the start date of the project shall be determined in consultation with the sponsor, and must be completed in 2021. All dates may be subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances having to do with Covid 19.

Public Arts Midland is a space to help people create connections through public art. Our vision for 2020 is Art Plays. The world has rapidly changed in the past month, but the role of art remains the same. We believe that art connects, heals, inspires, teaches, and speaks to us in myriad ways that build stronger and more vibrant communities. Public art gives our community a collective voice and a way to express our values while it brings awareness of and beauty to both the physical and cultural landscape of our city.

Stay tuned for more details on what we will be up to this year, and why we’re up to it. For now we would love to see how you’re being creative at home! We want to see it all- decorated windows, coloring books, paintings, photos, baking, making music… it’s all art!
