Public Arts Midland

Why We Exist

Public Arts Midland is a space to help people create connections through public art. We believe that art connects, heals, inspires, teaches, and speaks to us in myriad ways that build stronger and more vibrant communities. Public art gives our community a collective voice and a way to express our values while it brings awareness of and beauty to our city’s physical and cultural landscape.

2026 Theme: art heals

Public Arts Midland is excited to share our 2026 theme: art heals. This theme was selected by our committee to celebrate the restorative powers of art in both individuals and communities. Each year our theme acts as a lens through which we share thoughtful perspectives, spark conversations, and guide our work.

Art heals is a simple statement with deep implications. The act of creating art can be a healing experience allowing us to express ourselves, process emotions, and feel lighter when things are heavy. We use our hands, or our pen, or our voice, to ground ourselves, transforming emotions into something tangible. The experience of art can offer the same comforts. When we suffer a loss, we turn to poetry or music to feel less alone. We escape trauma and struggle in the stories of films, literature, and theatre. Sitting in the presence of art makes us feel more connected, understood, and human.

Art is a kind of magic, reminding us that no matter what our hardships are, others have walked similar paths. But more than that, art is scientifically proven to reduce cortisol levels, which lowers physical and emotional stress. It is well documented that creative activities help ease depression, anxiety, and support overall mental health.

Public art plays a vital role in shaping community, transforming spaces into places that people seek out, enjoy, and return to. As we explore ‘art heals’ in 2026, we encourage you to consider how art helps us to connect, cope, and create paths forward in our lives.

Public Arts Midland is committed to enriching Midland County by supporting art’s power to heal and connect, making Midland an exceptional place where everyone thrives.
