Midland Area Community Foundation Launches Wave Maker’s Society to Support Community Sustainability

The Midland Area Community Foundation has officially launched the Wave Maker’s Society. This new giving initiative invites community members to create ripples of generosity that grow into waves of long-term impact across Midland County.

The Wave Maker’s Society is designed to cultivate sustainable philanthropy through multi-year or one-time giving commitments to the Foundation’s Community Investment Fund. This flexible endowment supports Midland’s most important and emerging needs through grantmaking to local initiatives and nonprofit organizations. By joining, donors will help shape the community’s future while strengthening our ability to respond to challenges and opportunities for generations to come.

“Every wave starts with a ripple,” said Sharon Mortensen, President & CEO of the Midland Area Community Foundation. “When individuals, families, or businesses make a commitment through the Wave Maker’s Society, they are not only supporting the projects that matter today, they are helping ensure our community will have the resources to thrive far into the future. This is what it means to build permanent community capital: a legacy that sustains Midland forever.”

Through the Wave Maker’s Society, donors can choose to make a recurring contribution over three, five, or ten years, or make a one-time gift of $10,000 or more to advance community priorities immediately. The Foundation’s goal is to raise $5 million for the Community Investment Fund by 2035, building a resource that can respond to both current and future needs, from disaster relief and community revitalization projects to investments in local nonprofits.

Membership in the Wave Maker’s Society is open to anyone wishing to make an intentional and sustained investment in the community’s wellbeing. Donors may contribute at any level, and special recognition in Foundation communications will be given to those who join the cause. These commitments reflect the Foundation’s belief that every person has the power to create lasting change through the simple act of giving.

The Community Foundation serves as a trusted steward of funds, with 98 percent of contributions directed to community investment and under 2 percent reserved for administration. This ensures that each donor’s gift creates the maximum possible impact across Midland County.

The launch of the Wave Maker’s Society aligns with the Foundation’s long-term strategic plan to grow the Community Investment Fund, support nonprofit sustainability, and advance trust-based philanthropy. Each commitment, whether large or small, helps build permanent community capital and strengthens the Foundation’s ability to invest in local solutions that create meaningful transformation.
